SHIP TERMS

SHIP TERMS LENGTH OVERALL (LOA)                           The distance from the extreme forward part of the ship to the extreme aft of the ship is known as length overall. It is the greatest length of the ship. This length is important when docking. LENGTH BETWEEN PERPENDICULARS (LBP)             The distance between the forward perpendicular and aft perpendicular measured along the summer load line.   FORWARD PERPENDICULAR (FP)                 It is a perpendicular drawn at the point where the fore side of the stem meets the summer load line. AFT PERPENDICULAR (AP)                 It is a perpendicular drawn at the point where ...

TESTING OF WELDS

Purpose             Testing on welded joints are carried out for the following reasons             (a)        To ascertain the condition of weld metal.             (b)        To determine the metals maximum strength.             (c)         To determine defects on internal and external surfaces of metals. Methods used             There are two basic types of tests carried out on welded joints. They are as follows : (a)        Destructive tests (b)        Non-destructive test Destructive tests In destructive tests, the specimen...

KNOTS

KNOTS Types of knots used in ship are Overhand knot, Figure 8 knot, Reef knot, Sheep shank, Bowline, Running bowline, Bowline on the bight. 1. OVERHAND KNOT It is used for temporary whipping and preventing the rope unreeving of rope from the block and provides the foothold in a lifeline on life boat. 2. FIGURE 8 KNOT Used as stopper knot. Used for foot hold in life boat davit. Use in kneel grab lines of a life boat. It is also prevents a rope from running from block. 3. REEF KNOT  Ideal for securing bandages over a wound when tending injured personnel It is also employed in boat work, for the purpose of reefing sails. It is also used for tying the two end of rope when tying a bundle with a single rope. It is a knot therefore involves only one rope , joining a two rope by reef rope is wrong as it is liable for a slip. 4.  SHEEP SHANK It is used for temporary shortening a rope without cuttin...

RAT GAURD

Image
Steel or aluminium disks attached to mooring lines of ships to prevent rats from boarding vessel. If the ship has no rat guards fit, then all cargo loading operation will be stopped or delayed by the port health authorities.                                                                                                                                    RAT GUARD

NAVIGATIONAL LIGHTS AND SIGNALS

Image
INTRODUCTION A power driven vessel had to use a number of light and signals which are to used to indicate to the other ships whether the ship underway or at anchor or not under command or even aground Underway-when she had ropes running ashore. Also she is not in anchor or aground. Not under command generally when either the propeller, the engine, or the rudder is not working satisfactorily. There is a pattern in which these lights are set up on the ships and boats.  These lights work in such a manner that they can indicate an approaching ship about the position of another ship in its path. By understanding the position and the angle of the lights mentioned, the person at the helm (steering) of the opposite ship can clearly understand how much change needs to be done in the ship’s route. The visibility range of such lights varies between three miles to six miles. The lights that are used for ships and bigger boats have a longer range of visibility as compared to the...
